Jackie E Mahar

Jackie is a research scientist in the Australian Animal Health Laboratory at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness, CSIRO. She studied a PhD in molecular virology at La Trobe University and completed postdocs at CSIRO Black Mountain and the University of Sydney. As an evolutionary virologist and bioinformatician, she uses genomics to understand animal virus ecology and evolution on micro- and macro-scales. This includes >10 years’ experience applying phylodynamics to a range of viruses to explore virus emergence, distribution and spread. She is also a leading expert on the use of meta-transcriptomics for pathogen agnostic viral detection, surveillance and discovery.
